Schools to reopen August 4 for graduating students – FG

...WAEC holds August 17     The Federal Government has said Secondary schools in the country will reopen on August 4, 2020 for students in exit classes to sit for their examination. The government said students will have two weeks to prepare for the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination organised by the West Africa Examination Council. THREE-STOREY BUILDING COLLAPSES IN LAGOS, ONE RESCUED.

  A three-storey building has collapsed on Abeokuta Street in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State. It was gathered that emergency responders, who stormed the scene of the incident, rescued a yet-to-be-identified victim trapped in the rubble of the collapsed building. The Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, while reacting to the development, said there was no loss of life, adding that the cause of the building collapse had not been ascertained. He said, “Upon arrival at the scene of the incident, it was discovered that a three-storey building collapsed and the cause cannot be ascertained. ” The LASEMA Response Team led by Dops, LRU Ambulance Unit, Lasambus, LABSCA, Material Texting Agency, LASG fire service, the Police, and Ikeja Electric are responders at the scene of the incident. A search, rescue, and recovery operations have been concluded and one victim was rescued. There was no loss of life.”

The Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, has ordered an investigation into a viral video showing some police officers in Ibadan, Oyo state harassing a female suspect.   The officers had gone to the home of a suspected kidnapper and armed robber to arrest him and there they met the 25-year-old lady who gave her name as Towobola.   The policemen, after taking the kidnap suspect away, faced Towobola, handcuffed her and accused her of sleeping with the alleged kidnapper.   One of the police officers who identified himself as ‘Wyclef’, brought out his phone and started to film the Tobowola as he asked her questions about her sex life.   Wyclef in the video mocked Towobola, telling her that young ladies are fond of dating men with questionable wealth which often lands them in trouble. LBSL Gets Approval to Ply BRT Corridor

To Begin Implementation of New Transport Fares in August The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved the use of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) dedicated corridor by Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL) buses, just as he endorsed that operators of the buses can commute passengers to its full capacity without standing, subject to strict adherence to established safety protocols.  A statement issued by the office of the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Mr. Idowu Oguntona, also revealed that as part of ongoing reforms by the Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL), an average of 46 percent increase in the transportation fares of LBSL will take effect from 1st of August, 2020. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Tuesday, announced the cancellation of third term for pupils in both primary and secondary schools in the state. Mr Makinde, who announced this through his education commissioner, Olasunkanmi Olaleye also released a new academic calendar. Mr Olaleye said the third term of the 2019/2020 session has been cancelled and promotion of students, for all affected classes, will now be determined by first and second term continuous assessment. COVID-19: LASEPA Seals Farms City, Ajah Quilox Pool, two others for Environmental Law Infractions

For the second time since the outbreak of COVID-19 in the State, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, has sealed Farms City, Quilox Pool and Bar, as well as two other facilities in the Ajah area of the State for contravening different sections of the State Environmental Law and the directives of the State Government. Speaking on the enforcement exercise, the General Manager, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe disclosed that the action by the Agency was in line with the Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017, which mandated the Agency to address environmental violations that could pose a threat to the wellbeing of Lagosians and affect the environmental sustainability drive of the State government.  She explained that during the exercise, which was carried out in the late hours of Saturday and early hours of Sunday along the Lekki-Ajah axis of the State, two other entertainment and restaurant outlets, namely Page One in Ajah and Bien Mange in Abrah

     Barely four days to the partial closure of the Third Mainland Bridge for rehabilitation, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola, said massive rehabilitation of alternative routes were progressing. Popoola told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday that the Federal Ministry of Works and Lagos State Government were tackling the rehabilitation works together simultaneously on different access paths. He said rising from a stakeholders meeting which held on July 13th, all participants, including the roads maintenance interests groups, swung into immediate action to ensure minimal traffic discomfort. Military sources have revealed more details about the circumstances surrounding the death of Flying Officer Tolulope Arotile who was killed in an accident. The late Arotile was Nigeria’s first female combat helicopter pilot. She died on Wednesday, July 15, after reportedly being hit by a reversing car. Military sources have now come out to reveal that the driver of the car which killed Arotile is now in custody. Military sources who did not want to be named told Channels TV that the driver who knocked the officer down is a civilian who does not have any valid driving credentials. According to the sources, the civilian driver, accompanied by his friends, visited his relations at the Airforce base located in Mando area of Kaduna metropolis on that fateful day. The driver decided to drop off the late Airforce pilot whom he spotted on the road inside the base. 42 Nigerians Deported From Niger Republic Over Illegal Entry

    No fewer than 42 Nigerians have been expelled from Niger Republic after entering the West African country illegally. A statement by the Acting Controller of Nigeria Immigration Service in Katsina State, Abdullahi Dalhatu, made the disclosure on Friday, adding that 12 of the affected persons were arraigned before a Federal High Court sitting in Katsina on Thursday under Justice Hadiza Shagari.  He added, “Twelve of the 42 repatriated Nigerians have been arraigned before the Federal High Court in Katsina for evading immigration clearance while crossing Nigerian border to another country through illegal routes. The rest will soon be arraigned upon completion of charges against them. “I implore fellow Nigerians with the intention of entering or leaving Nigeria to always present themselves at a recognised port of entry before the immigration officer for examination.”  

Hushpuppi discards top Chicago lawyer as court transfers trial to California

A popular Nigerian Instagram celebrity facing wire fraud charges in the United States, Ramoni Abbas (popularly called Hushpuppi), has settled for a government lawyer after his case was transferred to another district. Mr Abbas, 37, who was resident in Dubai and known for flaunting extravagant lifestyle on social media, was arrested last month over money laundering allegations. He was extradited to the U.S on July 3. The Federal Bureau of Investigation had earlier alleged that Mr Abbas was part of a network that made “hundreds of millions of dollars” from business email compromise frauds and other scams. Also, the American government said Mr Abbas funded his extravagant lifestyle with stolen money.
