Lagos Hoodlums Attack: Sanni Okanlawon Advocates Establishment of State Police, Arrest of Hoodlums.
*Sympathizes
with Oba Akinolu and others over attack
*Calls
for social media regulation.
Following the large scale destruction of private and public
properties in Lagos State by some hoodlums that went on rampage last week over
purported shooting of Lekki Toll Gate #EndSars protesters by yet to be
identified military personnel, the Lawmaker representing Kosofe Constituency 1
in Lagos state House of Assembly Hon. Sanni Ganiyu Okanlawon has called for
immediate arrest and prosecution of the hoodlums as well as creation of state
police to guard against future occurrence.
Speaking at the special plenary of Lagos State House of
Assembly yesterday, Hon. Sanni Okanlawon stated that the destruction of private
and public properties in Lagos State by rampaging hoodlums was of catastrophic
proportion and described the act as wanton, unacceptable and insane.
He pointed out that the totality of wanton destruction of
lives and properties, desecration of cultural heritage and looting was a very dark
moment in the annals of Lagos state and a collateral damage to the pride and
ego of the people of the state.
He therefore urged the state government to immediately commence
the reflation of the economy and compensation to those who had suffered great
losses from the orgy of violence in the state.
And while expressing his sympathy to Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akinolu;
the security agents, Corporate Organisations and other individuals who have
suffered great losses as a result of the violent incidence, he called for the
arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the act as well as establishment
of state police in order to streamline Lagos state security and protect lives
and properties as stipulated in the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria.
His words: “I candidly want to advise this august house that
we should take our destiny in our hands. The idea of centralize police is no
longer fashionable. We must clamour for state police now more than ever. We
must clamour for community policing. Our neighbourhood watchers, Amotekun must
be strengthened even weaponized.
“See what has happened to Lagos. It has taken us 15 years
back. State police is what we must yearn for right now. Any constitutional
amendment without state police is a joke. We must take our destiny in our hands.
We do have inalienable rights to defend our lives and properties as guaranteed
by the constitution. Section 14 2b says the security and welfare of the people
belongs to the government. Which of the government? Is it only the federal
government? No. It includes State government and Local government. And section
33 subsection 1 says that everybody has a right to life and no one must be
deprived intentionally of his life”.
